Ontology-Based Approaches in Software Engineering

A new article out of AI3 discusses the need for ontology-based approaches in software engineering. According to the article, “In the U.S. alone, about 2 million people work as programmers or related. It goes without saying that software is a very big deal. No matter what the metrics, it is expensive to develop and maintain software. This is also true for open source, which has its own costs of ownership. Designing software faster with fewer mistakes and more re-use and robustness have clearly been emphases in computer science and the discipline of programming from its inception.” continued…

MyWebCareer Gives You Your “Career Score”

A recent article from Mashable.com looks at a new internet start-up, MyWebCareer. The company founded by Greg Coyle and Nip Zalavadia “has developed algorithms to run your “Career Score,” a credit check for your professional web persona. The service analyzes your Facebook profile, LinkedIn network, Twitter account and Google juice — evaluating more than 200 different variables in the process — and spits out a score between 350 to 850.” continued…

Google Refine + RDF Extension = Step To Enterprise Data Space

Time to reflect on Google Refine in so far as it relates to the RDF extension produced by DERI Researcher/ Linked Data Technologist Richard Cyganiak and DERI Research Master Student Fadi Maali, which debuted a couple months back. The RDF Extension adds a graphical user interface for exporting Refine project data in RDF format, and the pairing is worth a closer look by the enterprise community.

Imagining Web 4.0

Tom Jenkins, executive chairman of Open Text recently commented on the onset of web 3.0 and his predictions for web 4.0. Jenkins noted that, “digital natives, described as extremely tech-savvy Web users aged 30 and below, cannot demand enough of new gadgets and applications that tout productivity and time savings. It is this demand that is driving the early arrival of Web 3.0, or the Semantic Web.”

Talis, a leading company in the Semantic Web space, has sold its legacy library management and managed services business to Capita Software Services.  As a result, £18 Million (over $28 Million USD) will be added to the Talis coffers — funds that the company can put toward helping its customers get more value out of Semantic Technologies.

The University of Texas at Austin is seeking a Web Developer: “As part of a web applications team, the Web Developer will build complex, interactive, database driven web applications (primarily python/django), and assist in the deployment and maintenance of a complex email marketing and constituent management tool.” Essential duties listed for the position include deploying “web applications on web servers (mac, linux, Unix) using tools including Apache, MySQL, Python (Django), XHTML, CSS, and Javascript.” The position calls for at least three years of experience. continued…
