Semantic Web Elevator Pitch for… Government and Citizenry?

Last year, former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown gave a 90-second elevator pitch for the Semantic Web.  Granted, it started about four minutes into a 32-minute long speech. This speech, given March 22, 2010, was long before our original challenge went out, but this discovery was simply too fun to not include it here. Obviously, it was not an official submission.

Drupal is the Content Management System of Choice in DC

We recently reported on semantic technology’s potential role in national security. A new article shows progress on the front of semantic technology in government, but there are still some roadblocks. As the article puts it, “Using open source software in the federal government is challenging, but the problem is not due to the technology. The problem lies with old procurement models and regulations that are better suited for buying file cabinets and missiles than negotiating licenses for ‘free’ open source software.”

HTML 5 Will Be the Standard in 2014, Hopefully

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has announced that it expects HTML 5 to reach “recommendation” status in 2014. The goal sets a potentially enormous milestone for the semantic web. According to Ian Jacobs, head of communications at W3C, “If you invest the term ‘standard’ with seriousness, you need interoperability, and testing is a part of that.” continued…

Thingworx Receives $5MM from Safeguard Scientifics

We recently reported on Thingworx, “a revolutionary platform designed to accelerate the development of applications connecting people, systems and devices.” Yesterday Safeguard Scientifics announced that it has invested $5 million in Series B financing in the Pennsylvania-based startup. According to the President and CEO of Safeguard, Peter Boni, “Safeguard is now in a position of financial strength and flexibility to deploy capital into new, high-growth, high-value companies,” companies like Thingworx. continued…

Charlene Yi Gives Her Take on Real-Time Updates and Social Search

In a recent interview, Charlene Yi, founder of the Altimeter Group gave her insights on the problems and possibilities created by social search and real-time updates. In the interview Yi states, “I think search is moving into this very interesting stage where it’s a combination of semantic web, the social web, and context. That combination will lead to a much more relevant experience.”

Introducing UMBEL Version 1.00

After four years of tinkering, Structured Dynamics and Ontotext are ready to announce the release of UMBEL version 1.00, the first production-grade release of the system. According to the article, UMBEL (Upper Mapping and Binding Exchange Layer) “is primarily a reference ontology, which contains 28,000 concepts (classes and relationships) derived from the Cyc knowledge base. The reference concepts of UMBEL are mapped to Wikipedia, DBpedia ontology classes, GeoNames and PROTON.” continued…
